Happiest of Mondays to you all. We are excited to start a new week and to bring you another glimpse into what yoga means to different people in different places. This one is coming to us from Anna Hyclak, an Operations Content Strategist at Google in NYC. Check it out:
My yoga is my opportunity to get out of my own head, to be playful, to try new things, to channel good vibrations. My practice is a nontraditional one - I love mixing up different styles and traditions, flowing to different types of music, and doing random tree poses in my kitchen while I'm cooking dinner or on the subway platform while I'm waiting for the train.
I tend to practice mostly at Y7 Studio or Sky Ting Yoga in NYC - both of which put a unique spin on the traditional yoga class. Y7 Studio plays Drake and Beyoncé during their sweaty, fast-paced vinyasa classes; Sky Ting Yoga incorporates pranayama and meditations to essays by Bill Murray (and has a giant stuffed giraffe in one corner of the studio, which is the perfect thing to focus on when you're doing balance work). I believe that yoga should be fun, it should be silly, you should be able to fall in the middle of a crow pose and laugh at yourself, your practice should be entirely unique to you and your personality.
And it doesn't always have to be zen! My yoga is sometimes angry, or annoyed, or stressed out. Sometimes all I really want to do is lay in child's pose, or work out my excess energy through a series of warrior's poses. That's what I love most about yoga - it adapts to whoever you are and whatever you're feeling in the moment, and helps you tune into your body and mind and get a little bit of peace (or at least acceptance, or a little break from the mental chatter). And that's a beautiful thing.
Let loose and have fun this week everyone! Namaste.
Happy Monday, how are you all? We hope you are fabulous. Sorry we missed you last week, but Samara was in Saint Martin for her friend's wedding, so we decided to take the week off. If you follow Samara on social media (which you should) you can see some pics from the absolutely gorgeous affair!
Now that we are back, we are excited to share with you another entry in our "My Yoga" series from Union Yoga + Wellness Studio Manager, Nicky Wright.
"Yoga on the mat is me time. It's the time that I can choose where my intention and focus go. Whether that is to work towards a meditation practice or get out of my head and into my body. I try to practice yoga in my everyday life by using the lessons I learn about myself from the mat. I feel so lucky to be able to help others learn and use yoga the way they need it. "
Want to meet Nicky in person? Pop into Union Yoga + Wellness ;)
Have a great week everyone and be sure to take some time for yourselves.
